How can I fix the "Another Update in Progress" WordPress issue?

Why does “Another Update In Progress” occur?

WordPress has a built-in safety mechanism that is in place to prevent any other update process from being started while the core is updated. This feature is excellent as it dramatically reduces the chance of your core update failing, which may result in your website going down or breaking completely.

Typically, when the WordPress version is updated, this message should disappear, and you should be able to update your plugins or themes. Sometimes, however, it remains active, which is quite tedious, and in this article, we will go over two methods you can use to fix it. Let’s get going!

Fixing “Another Update In Progress” with a plugin

The way WordPress prevents you from updating other plugins and themes on your site is by adding a lock inside its database inside. The easiest way of resolving this issue is by installing a plugin called “Fix Another Update in Progress”. It will seamlessly remove this lock without you having to do anything inside the database if you are not feeling confident enough.

  1. Please install the plugin mentioned above. If you are not sure how to install a plugin on WordPress, please check our tutorial on the matter here
  2. After installing the plugin, proceed to Settings > Fix Another Update in Progress to remove the lock. You should see the “There is no Update lock issue. Continue with your WordPress Update” message if everything went smoothly.
  3. Lastly, you can remove the plugin if you do not want additional clutter in your WordPress admin or leave it active if this happens again.

Fixing “Another Update In Progress” using phpMyAdmin

Suppose the above method did not work, or you prefer fixing this without having to install additional plugins on your site. In that case, you can use phpMyAdmin or any other database management program.

  1. Navigate to phpMyAdmin inside your cPanel. If you are not sure how to do that, we have a great tutorial on the matter.
  2. After you have gone inside, please find your website’s database and click on it. If you are unsure which one is it, you should go to your domain’s root directory and look inside the wp-config.php file.
  3. After clicking on the database, you should see all its tables. Look for the wp_options (the wp_ prefix may be different in your case)table and press it.
  4. Use the search option in your database explained in this tutorial and look for the following table: core_updater.lock. Upon finding it, press the “Delete” button and then confirm the deletion process.
  5. Now that there is no database lock, you can proceed with your updates!
