How to check your Plesk account's disk space usage

Introduction

Monitoring your Plesk account’s disk space usage is essential for maintaining a healthy hosting environment. When your disk space becomes limited, it can cause problems such as failed uploads, database errors, slow performance, and even website downtime.

Plesk provides an easy-to-use interface that allows you to quickly see how much storage your website, files, emails, and databases are using. This makes it simple to identify large files, manage storage efficiently, and take action before running out of space.

In this tutorial, we will guide you through the process of checking your web hosting account’s disk space usage in Plesk.

Getting Started

First and foremost, make sure you are logged in to your Plesk control panel. To perform that, please enter your IP address, hostname, or domain name inside your web browser’s search bar and add “:8443” at the end. It should look something like: “https://yourdomain.com:8443”. By doing that, you will be prompted by a login form requesting your username and password.

After logging in with your username and password, Plesk will automatically display the “Websites & Domains” page, which will be your index page from where you can manage everything related to your websites and domains on Plesk.

Accessing Disk Space Usage Overview

To check your disk usage, please point your attention to the left side of the page where you will see the “Statistics” option. Please click on it.

Performing the option above will redirect you to a page where you can view detailed reports on how resources are used by the webspace. If you have several webspaces, you can view reports for each of them by selecting the required webspace at the top right corner of the page.

You will see pie charts that correspond to the disk space usage and the traffic generated by the account. As this tutorial focuses on disk space, please focus your attention on the first pie chart.

Reviewing Disk Space Breakdown

Plesk will now display a detailed breakdown of your storage usage. The report will include:

  • Web content (httpdocs) - This will represent the storage used by your HTML, PHP, images, and media files.
  • Logs - This will represent the disk space usage by access logs, error logs, and other system logs.
  • Configuration files - This will represent the storage used by your
  • Mail - This will highlight the storage used by your email inboxes.configuration/system files.
  • Database storage - This will show the disk space used by MySQL/MariaDB databases.
  • Backups - This will show the storage used by local backups.
  • Anonymous FTP directory - This will present the disk space used by any anonymous FTP directories on your Plesk account.

This section is very useful to help you understand which parts of your hosting environment are consuming the most space.

Checking Individual Directory Sizes

If you want more detailed information as to what files or folders are consuming the disk space, you can check the size of specific folders. To do so, please point your attention to the left-hand side again and, from the options there, click on the “Files” option.

Executing the action above will redirect you to the File Manager, where you can identify large directories, such as upload folders, image libraries, or backups stored within your website files. Point your attention to the “Size” column, which will show each file how much disk space it utilizes.

If you want to check this size for folders, there is a functionality that allows you to perform that. Please use the checkbox corresponding to the directory you want to check, and then from the “More” drop-down menu, located above the table, select “Calculate Size”.

Doing this will start a brief loading screen, and after the disk space has been calculated, the size will be presented above the table section.

Checking Database Size

To see how much space your databases are using, please select the “Databases” option from the left side menu.

Performing this will redirect you to the page that will contain all your databases on your Plesk account in a neatly packed table section.

To view the size of a specific database, please click on the database itself to not only unveil its size but also other tools that can help you manage it.

Point your attention to the mentioned tools below, and you will see the actual database disk usage!

Large databases may indicate heavy usage, leftover data, or logs that should be cleaned up.

Checking Email Storage Usage

If email accounts are consuming significant space, you can check their email account and act accordingly. To check their sizes, please navigate to the “Mail” functionality from the left-hand menu and click on it.

Performing the action above will display all your existing email accounts on the server, and under the “Usage” column, you will be able to see the size they consume.

Email attachments are often a major contributor to disk usage.

Conclusion

As you can see, Plesk provides a simple and clear way to monitor your Plesk account’s disk space usage. By regularly checking how your resources are being used, you can prevent storage problems, maintain smoother website performance, and keep your hosting environment healthy.

We hope this tutorial was helpful, and we kindly encourage you to review your disk usage periodically to ensure your website continues running without interruptions.
