General Settings: Localization Tab

Introduction

Welcome to another part of our WHMCS General Settings tutorial. This tutorial will review another tab from the General Settings, namely, the “Localization” tab. Before we begin, let’s explain with a few words what localization means. Localization is the act of transforming the text, visual layout, or service name of a digital product to meet the requirements of a particular culture or language and make it more appealing to people native to it.

Of course, WHMCS has an abundance of configuration options under the General Settings, and we will review them in the rest of our WHMCS tutorials in the series.

Getting Started

To access the General Settings, please log inside your WHMCS admin area. After you log in, please point your attention to the top right corner. There you will see the wrench icon. Please click on it, and then click on the "System Settings" option from the revealed icons.

This action will redirect you to the "System Settings" page, where you will see all the available WHMCS settings.

To access the "General Settings," please click on the "General Settings" content box, which will be the first option under the "All Settings" title.

Localization Tab

To access the "Localization" tab, please click on the "Localization" tab on the right side of the "General" tab. It will contain settings related to the WHMCS's localization, such as default language, time & date format, and country.

Let's go over the settings individually so you can understand them better.

  • System Charset - Please set the default system charset in this text field. We recommend keeping the default utf-8 here.
  • Global Date Format - Please choose the numeric date display format using this drop-down menu. This setting depends on your personal preferences and the customers you sell web hosting to.
  • Client Date Format - Please use this drop-down menu to set the display style for clients. Again, this is up to personal preference.
  • Default Country - Please use this drop-down menu to set the country in which your company operates.
  • Default Language - Please use this drop-down menu to set the default language for your WHMCS. We recommend keeping English as the default language if you provide web hosting services for international customers.
  • Enable Language Menu - Please use this tickbox to allow users to change the system's language. If ticked off, they will not be able to change their language. We recommend keeping this with the default setting so customers can pick their desired language locale.
  • Dynamic Field Translations - Please use this tickbox to enable Dynamic Field Translation. When enabled, a "Translate" button will appear next to the translatable field, allowing customers to translate the area they want.
  • Remove Extended UTF-8 Characters - Please use this tickbox to disable 4-byte UTF-8 characters. This option is enabled by default and automatically removes special characters from customer ticket posts and emails, such as Kanji characters and emojis. We recommend keeping it enabled.
  • Phone Numbers - Please use this checkbox to enable the international phone number information interface and formatting during sign-up. When enabled, WHMCS will automatically select the customer's country and phone number prefix when it detects their location.

Once you have chosen the desired settings on this page, please click on the blue “Save Changes” button located at the bottom of the page. Otherwise, please click the grey “Cancel Changes” button on the right side of it to revert them.

This wraps up all the settings in the WHMCS “Localization” tab. Hopefully, you found our explanations helpful, and you were able to use the settings within this tab to fine-tune your WHMCS’s localization capabilities and appeal to an even broader audience.

Conclusion

Please follow our next tutorial in line, which will go through the “Ordering” tab. It contains settings related to WHMCS's order form and how your customers use it to purchase web hosting services, such as order form templates, order fraud checks, auto-provisioning, and many others.
